Skip the “Stretch Lab”
Skip the “Stretch Lab.” Understand the source of your tightness.
As a physical therapist, I agree that flexibility is important to aspects of our daily lives. Flexibility improves our ability to reach down to tie our shoes, reach overhead into cabinets, helps our ability to maximize performance for that running or biking PR, and helps us drop that golf score.
What is important to recognize is that our muscular system is dynamic. While stretching is important, we also need to understand that tight muscles that do not respond to basic stretching, are telling us something else.
Our brain can interpret low grade inflammation as a sense of “tightness.” Additionally, a stiff or tight joint may make us feel as though we need to stretch. However, the inflammation and joint stiffness need to be addressed ahead of any stretching.
Using a physical therapist to evaluate and treat the underlying inflammation and joint stiffness could clear the pathway to more effective stretching and flexibility maintenance.
